Joomla is a content management system (CMS),is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone. which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications.

The official name for Joomla! comes from a Swahili word meaning "All together" or "As a whole".

Joomla is written in PHP, and uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques (since version 1.5 ) and software design patterns,stores data in a MySQL or (since version 2.5) MS SQL database, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, and support for language internationalization.

A brief history of Joomla

Joomla officially founded in August 2005 as an evolution of the Mambo project and the creation of the site OpenSourceMatters.org, understood as a community of developers around the world.
In September 2005 was released the first official version of Joomla under the name of 1.0.
Over the years there have been several releases issued 1.5 - 1.6 - 1.7 - 2.5 until the current 3.0
