Graduated on Lomonosov Moskow State University in Physics in 1967, specialized in Physics applied to Information Technology. His research interests and methods are wide-ranging.
Much of his work on technological innovation has concerned new Information Technologies, and he has been particularly interested in Software Engineering and Industrial Software Security, pioneering research into these industries. Broader interests concern the security implications of changing technology, and the security shaping of technologies; the evaluation of software security Forensic Science and other research programmes; and forensic methods and practice.
